Cresskill Brook Dam Removal & Stream Restoration

Dam Removal and Restoration of Native Brook Trout Habitats in Bergen County, NJ

This project was started a number of years before Equity was involved by a private homeowner with the goal being to restore a portion of Cresskill Brook in Bergen County, New Jersey to its natural state. The Equity team got involved and assisted the project with applications for and receiving grants from Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to provide for the construction portion of the project.

Additional stakeholders in the project included: Trout Unlimited (both National and the East Jersey Chapter), the New Jersey; Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), and the US Department of Agriculture.

Key accomplishments included: Preparation of an Engineering Plan, design of the demolition of a dam and restoration of the Brook, preparation of Contract Documents, including plans and technical specifications, preparation and submittal of the dam removal permit application, bidding of the construction, completion of a fish study of the Brook by the NJDEP Fish and Wildlife bureau with results confirming the presence of a population of native brook trout, completion of a Phase 1 Archeological investigation, construction, and restoration planting.
